ReUnited’s bright start to the season stalled quite badly with a disappointing draw with lowly Oranje. We were missing a number of players but still able to field a strong team which should have been able to get the job done.
The conditions were rainy and difficult and the first half was a messy affair. The Dutch had the best early chances, causing problems with their direct play. Cody made one outstanding save along with a routine one where the Dutch side’s striker might have done better.
We grew into the game and had a few clear chances that we failed to take. It finished 0-0 at halftime and we were confident about scoring in the second. This outlook proved correct when Alex thumped in a shot shortly into the second half and we looked to be cruising when Johnson added a second.
However, the Dutch did not give up and they pulled one back quite quickly after a mix up in defence. The pressure was then on and after a collision in the box the referee pointed to the spot. Cody saved the resultant penalty but it bounced kindly for their striker who headed goalward again. Cody could only get fingertips on it this time and the game was tied at 2-2.
We pushed hard for a winner and had some chances but the Dutch keeper was in fine form and his defence was resolute. And so a miserable day’s weather was coupled with a miserable result.
