ReUnited ended the season in style, claiming the SIFL Cup for the first time and defeating their arch rivals the Shooters.
The conditions were rainy before and around kick off which gave us unpleasant reminders of our recent 5-1 loss to the Shooters in the Champions Cup.
However this was to be a very different match and after weathering the customary early Shooters storm we took the lead on the break when Tobi delivered a fantastic low cross and Alex finished expertly.
This took some wind out of the Shooters sails and they were to suffer again when Tobi controlled a ball on the right side of the box and hit a swerving, dipping shot which bamboozled the Shooters keeper and flew in.
We went into the break knowing that the match was far from over and the Shooters would come back strongly but somehow this did not prevent two quick goals from our opponent’s just after half time.
The Shooters had again put us under siege at the beginning of a half but this time had got their rewards. We refused to crumble completely though and the rest of the half became a more even affair.
And so it finished 2-2 and we went into extra time. We were the stronger team and an already tiring Shooters were further hampered by going down to ten men. Lucas went close twice before Adam hit the bar in the dying seconds.
No more goals meant a penalty shot out and with the Shooters keeper struggling with an injury we fancied our chances.
Florian stepped up first and converted confidently before Cody saved a soft penalty from them. Next up was Steve who slotted into the corner, the Shooters scored their second too before Alex re-established our advantage.
There was much pressure on our opponent’s next shooter and Cody saved brilliantly, diving to his right. We needed just one more goal to win the tournament and Adam duly and coolly stepped up to do so.
Jubilation followed and continued for the rest of the day and evening. Well done, boys!
