ReUnited continued to exert pressure on SIFL Champions the Lions with this tight and difficult victory. We still sit top of the league but with the French team having a game in hand our destiny is not in our own hands.
With no recognisable striker to select this week we always knew we would have to take what chances came our way. Azzurri lined up with a strong midfield and at times we found it difficult to match their possession.
The beginning of the match saw the Italians on top but we slowly found our way into the game. Our first real chance fell to Ross who hit a dipping volley just over the bar. Then it was Ross again who found Joe on the right side of the box and he picked out the corner to give us the lead.
Azzurri pushed back in response but their finishing was a little poor and they did not test Cody much in goal. They were creating more than we were though which meant half-time came at a good time.
The second half continued in the same vein with Azzurri dominating possession and passing the ball well but failing to really slice us open. We were awarded and missed a penalty and Adam hit the underside of the bar with a great shot.
All in all a draw would have been a fair result but a victory for us was not particularly unjust. And so we have one game to play against second placed Shooters and are otherwise hoping for favours from our SIFL brethren.
