The semifinal between 3United and United was played on a wet and drizzly morning in Songjiang. Both teams were raring to go from the start, ready to face either the Vikings of Anzacs in the plate final.
Play was intense from the first whistle and it was United who was able to put up the first point from a free kick. A United free kick was given outside the box and placed nicely into top left corner where Matthias Kuck, 3U keeper, was able to get there and palm the ball from crossing the line. But Wallie of United was able to run in and head the rebound into the net before any defenders or the keeper could get a handle on it. The half finished 1-0, United.
During the second half 3United was able to equalize with a goal from Alvaro Roca who made a 40 meter sprint down the right side (assisted by a well placed clear by Mike Miller) and chipped the keeper. United came right back to take the lead for the second time with a cross/shot by Wallie, again, from the right side across goal just clipping down into the top left corner of the next past the outstretched hands of Matthias Kuck. 3United did not give up hope though, as a few minutes later Nick Law received a ball at midfield from defender Derek Yesionowski and beat 2 defenders and then the keeper, to once again tie the game. There was a tense 15 minutes of scoreless play as each side was looking for the winner. Then 3United sent a through ball deep into United territory and just as the United keeper was about to pick the ball up, Nick Law made a well-timed run to knock the ball away and keep possession. While the keeper and defenders closed in, Law passed the ball back to Joe Williams outside the box, who side footed the ball into the top right corner of the net to give 3United their first lead of the game. United fought hard the last 10 minutes to get in an equalizer to push the game to penalties but the 3United defense held and were able to end their losing streak. Final score, 2:3, 3United.
